Marquette — Do you think you can stand to lose weight? Do you have any relatives who live with diabetes? Do you know if your blood sugar level has begun to rise? Participating in the Diabetes Prevention Program’s Weight Loss Program is a way to get support and encouragement to change your lifestyle to prevent diabetes. That’s what Lynn St. Aubin, who lives in western Marquette County, did. This is her story:

“I joined DPP because of many risk factors for diabetes in the future, including weight, waist size, diet, inactivity, family history, race, and sleep. I can change my family history, race, and age. I didn’t have to focus on the rest. Doing this with the help of UP Diabetes Outreach Director Unconstance seemed like a great place to start. ..

I didn’t know that attending Anne’s class would allow me to meet a wonderful woman who suffers from many of the same problems. I have turned to them for help for many times of trial. They supported and helped me.

I started to realize much more about what I was eating and when and why I ate something that didn’t help my goal of losing weight. I’m exercising hard and trying to get 8 hours of good sleep every night.

In March 2017, I weighed 190 pounds. I was still able to hike, backpack and bike, but had a hard time catching up with my friends. And it took time to recover after the activity, and the pain and pain increased. I knew I needed to lose weight, but I couldn’t find my “reason”. You can rationalize weight gain when it slowly creeps on you, and you can still do what you enjoy.

It resonated with me when Anne said that 5% weight loss could affect those factors. Instead of telling myself that I need to lose £ 60-70, I had a goal of £ 9.5.

I think my biggest challenge was to really understand why I ate and find out why I overeat. It took a long time to reach a place where food was neither a reward, a friend, nor an enemy.

My greatest success is being healthy. It was my greatest help to know through this that I was not alone. My classmates have become my friends.
