Navajo Nation struggles to survive the coronavirus

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the Navajo tribe had 2,304.41 Covid-19s per 100,000 at its peak in May, compared to 1,806 per 100,000 in New York State.

From the beginning of the pandemic to November 22, the Navajo have 15,039 cases out of 173,667 in the 2010 census. In short, the population affected by this is over 8,659 per 100,000.

Due to the recent surge in positive cases, Navajo Nation was closed until December 6th. Most companies are closed because the school is completely online and Navajo Nation is working to reduce the spread of the virus. Important businesses should close by 3 pm daily.

Lack of government support

Timothy Nelson, principal of Pinon High School, believes there are several reasons for the high prevalence of Navajo Nation, including the lack of federal and state government support.

“I’ve always told people,’If you want to see a country in the Third World, look inside the United States,'” Nelson said. “Where is the government funding to help fight this Covid virus here in Navajo?”

He has never seen evidence of government assistance in or around Pinon to help fight a pandemic.

“It makes me feel good,” Nelson said. “We call ourselves the United States and support other countries, but we don’t really support them.”

According to 2010 US census figures, 38% of people in Navajo Nation live below the poverty line. That’s more than double the US poverty rate of 15.1%, according to the 2010 census figures.

At state-run Pinon High School, more than 98% of students are eligible for a free or discounted lunch program, compared to an average of 55% in the state.

As the infection rate went up, Nelson said he was afraid to ask people how he was doing because he learned that someone in his family had died.

Funeral she couldn’t attend

Beverly Mix, a mother of four living 15 miles east of Pinon, said her cousin died of the virus and couldn’t say goodbye. She said that only close family members were allowed to attend the funeral and were not allowed to see his body.

“What if they wanted to put things in the casket?” Mix said. “From the hospital, they put him in a casket, and that was it.”

Many other locals share similar stories about broken hearts and losses. Two teachers in the Pinon school district died of the coronavirus in the summer. Robert La Barge, a high school English teacher, has a student in his class who is one grandson of the teacher.

“He’s always a pretty cheerful, sarcastic kid with an extroverted personality,” Lavage said. “I soon realized that it was a little gone.”

This country is short of resources

Navajo Nation spans northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico, covering 27,000 square miles. People living in remote areas have difficulty accessing facilities that city dwellers take for granted, such as Wi-Fi and running water.

Following the guidelines of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can be difficult if people do not have running water to wash their hands, shower or bathe. Staying connected to the latest news and safety information is also a challenge if you have little or no access to the Internet.

Save the old generation

When people can see the news, residents of Navajo Nation, such as Chinle High School senior and mixed daughter Chenoa Begay, say it’s a challenge to persuade their older people to listen. I will.

Begay’s grandmother, Mix’s mother, was 72 years old and had a hard time listening to her guidance and adjusting her daily life.

The Navajo Nation settlement is highly valued for spending time with the community and loved ones, so it was also difficult for mothers to understand that it was safest not to meet others.

“She likes to visit, she likes to have visitors, and it was life-changing for her because we tell her not to do so,” Mix said.

When the coronavirus struck the settlement, Mix’s mother learned to adapt to these guidelines. Nelson also understands that obeying the rules is important for saving precious lives. But he admitted that strict regulations made him mentally tired.

“When you’re in the middle of it, when you’re in a hotspot, it comes at a cost,” Nelson said. “I think it’s when reality strikes, you lose someone you know, someone who had Covid, and what they’ve experienced.”
