Local data analysis

As Tennessee reported a problem with its data reporting system, COVID-19 numbers in northeastern Tennessee dropped dramatically on Tuesday, reducing tests processed at night.

“Note: Due to a system issue, fewer tests are processed at night,” the agency posted on Twitter. “Most of the tests are expected to be included in daily case count updates over the next few days.”

As a result, only 105 new tests have been reported in the region, leading to an astonishing positive test rate of 86.67%. No county reported more than 26 new tests (Sullivan), and only one reported a positive rate of less than 75%. Sullivan County reported 27 new positives and 26 new tests, resulting in an actual positive rate of 103.85%.

It was the first day in the region of less than 100 new cases since 1 November, with 94 reported in 6 counties.

Sullivan County reported the most at 31, while Hancock and Johnson counties reported nothing. The number of active cases also decreased sharply, with a decrease of 434 people throughout the region. The number of active cases in Sullivan County has decreased by more than 100, as in Washington County.

Three new deaths have been reported in the area and 400 are at stake. New deaths have been reported in Sullivan (+2) and Washington (+1) counties.

Hospitalization

Ballad Health reported on Tuesday that hospitalizations fell further and the system’s COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped from 217 to 211, but hospitalizations are expected to increase in the coming weeks. Ballad predicts that more than 200 hospitalizations and about 150 deaths will occur in the two weeks from November 22nd to December 5th.

Ballad’s chief operating officer, Eric Deaton, said at a press conference on Tuesday, “These are clearly just predictions, but I’m worried that we’ll start seeing how they’re being played exactly based on modeling. I will hold you. “

The number of cases is expected to increase as a result of Thanksgiving gatherings, which is expected to lead to an increase in hospitalization.

Positively, predictive modeling of the system shows that it is below the worst-case scenario of spreads that would have seen 350 hospitalizations by the end of this year, but which is the post-Thanksgiving surge. It is unknown how it will affect you.

As of Tuesday, there were 211 (-6) hospitalizations, 44 (-2) intensive care patients, and 29 (-1) ventilators. There was one person waiting for the test results. At a press conference on Tuesday, the system reported that the medical / surgical bed had a capacity of 91.6%, the ICU had a capacity of 91.3%, and 15 COVID-19 ICU beds were still available.

The system also announced a cluster of infections at Wexford House, the system’s short-term and long-term nursing facility in Kingsport.

According to a release from Ballad, 36 staff and 52 residents are positive, slightly different from the number reported by the state on Friday for 56 and 33 staff infected. ..

The state has reported one death, but Ballad’s statement has not reported any deaths. Infected individuals requiring hospitalization were transferred to a special COVID-19 unit at the Holston Valley Medical Center.

There was a record number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients in Tennessee hospitals for 10 consecutive days on Tuesday, with 2,116 inpatients — 574 in the ICU and 262 in the ventilator. Dr. Lisa Piercy, Director of Health, Tennessee, said COVID-19 patients make up 34% of state ICU patients.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Mr. Piercy said the state expected the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to arrive in mid-December.
