Family says a retired Dallas nurse dies of COVID-19 to train others
Iris Meda was a nurse for 35 years, but retired when a pandemic broke out. At the age of 70, she taught nursing skills at Collin College, a suburb of Dallas. She and her family believe it was outreach that exposed her to the coronavirus.
“I love her to be this person for many, without seeking glory,” said Serene Meda Schramel, daughter of Iris. “It was all done very quietly.”
This holiday season, new silence fills Serene’s home. The woman and mom she called her best friend are no longer alive to fill the world with souls and songs.
Iris was from New York, with a heart as big as Texas. The family shares many home videos and photos with NewsNation and can see Iris dancing and singing with friends in the car. The 35-year-old nurse found the best medicine in the melody.
“She retired in January,” Selene said. “She was just tired. She said she was fed up with all that rigor. She had a lot of plans! We had a lot of plans together.”
But when January turned into March and spring turned into a pandemic, Iris knew the world and future frontline workers needed her knowledge. So she returned to the workforce and taught nursing students at Collin College in McKinney, Texas.
“She knows exactly when she was exposed,” Selene said. “She actually kept a diary with the date of exposure, the date of reporting, and the date of symptoms.”
One of her students tested positive for COVID-19, and eventually iris. Deterioration of her health soon landed her in the hospital.
“The last word she tells me is,’I’m going to fight this. I’m strong in New York,” and that was the last thing my mother told me. She was intubated on October 28 and died on November 14. “
Selene sits on the floor in the living room while reading an old family album, sharing the story of her mother, whose first bed was an ironing board, and spending time, resources, and life until the last day as a future healthcare hero.
“She was really selfless,” said her 15-year-old granddaughter Elizabeth Shramel. “I always knew she was special and compassionate, but that would make me love her even more … if that was possible.”
The family hopes that selflessness does not mean losing her altogether.
“That’s exactly what we are experiencing,” Selene said. “A vacant seat at the table with our best friend Nana, our anchor. And she’s just … she’s gone.”
Selene told NewsNation that she knew she wasn’t the only one to suffer this loss in 2020. For her mother, other frontline workers, and those who have lost the fight against the virus, she asks Americans to take the coronavirus seriously. She says the pandemic should call for the enthusiastic participation of all of us.
