Royal Stoke Hospital declares “serious incident” after 38 Covid patients on ventilator
A Staffordshire The hospital declared a “serious incident” after an increase in the number of serious coronavirus cases on Friday night.
The arrangement will be implemented until Tuesday.
Currently, there are 322 coronavirus patients in beds at Royal Stoke Hospital and Stafford County Hospital.
Tracy Brock, chief executive officer of North Midland University Hospital, apologized to patients and their families who were involved in the turmoil, saying the two hospitals were under intense pressure, especially within Royal Stoke’s critical care services.
“We have taken various steps to ensure that NHS resources are directed where they are needed during the Covid-19 pandemic and that both hospitals, staff and patients remain safe. Care is prioritized to protect staff, patients. Stoke-on-Trent Live reported she said.
“The decision to transfer patients from our hospital is not something we downplay. I would like to apologize to the patients and their families affected by this.”
Mr. Brock said he hopes the crisis will be resolved quickly as the infection rate in the community appears to be declining.
“We encourage all communities to maintain the good progress we have made to reduce infection rates and remember hands, faces and spaces,” she said.
This arrangement occurs when Royal Stoke staff are faced with “unprecedented pressure.”
“We’ve never experienced this before. It creates a lot of pressure on everyone in the organization trying to do the best for their patients,” said the hospital. Rob Irving, Royal College of Nursing Leader, said.
“And sometimes, when you are under this kind of pressure, those decisions are not easy and no one will be pleased.”
He called the decision to move the patient out of the trust’s intensive care unit a “last resort decision,” and added that they would not have been taken “unless absolutely necessary.”
In Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire, an additional 374 cases of new coronavirus were reported, including 123 cases in the city alone.
