North Dakota COVID-19 antibody test awaits planning
Bismarck, North Dakota (AP) — North Dakota has tens of thousands of COVID-19 antibody tests that are still awaiting use plans months after the state has acquired them.
Bismarck Tribune reported that the state obtained 178,000 COVID-19 antibody tests last spring using $ 3.68 million from federal CARES law coronavirus aid. Only about 8,000 people were actually used, according to health officials.
Future plans rely on the participation of new full-time state health officials. Four people, selected by Republican Governor Doug Burgum, have been in this position since May, but all have resigned. Interviews with new people are in progress.
This test analyzes antibodies in the patient’s blood to determine how the virus has spread. Experts say it’s still limited and we’re looking at its usefulness in the long run. Dr. Noemateo, an infectious disease specialist at Sanford Health in Bismarck, said antibody testing primarily helps determine the amount of infected population and who may be a convalescent plasma donor. Convalescent plasma has been given as a treatment for coronavirus disease, but there are still questions about how to use plasma optimally for such patients, Mateo said.
North Dakota underwent a serological test during the transition between state health officials. Former Ministry of Health Chief of Staff Dirk Wilke, who has no medical education, is now a interim state health officer.
Once hired, the new state health department will develop a plan for using antibody testing.
North Dakota has become a hotspot for the virus, with the worst per capita rates of new cases.
Officials on Saturday confirmed 13 new deaths on the final day, bringing the virus to 915 deaths across the state. In November, the deadliest month since the pandemic began, 349 people have died so far.
The state said Saturday that 317 people hospitalized for COVID-19 increased by eight. According to the latest data, only 15 intensive care unit beds and 278 inpatient beds are available throughout the state.
Since the pandemic began, there have been nearly 78,000 positive tests, including 750 reported on Saturday.
