Many are afraid to catch the COVID-19 unit and are afraid to work on it. But if we are all afraid, how can we take care of others? I see it as helping someone who can’t help myself.
I don’t use a ventilator, but I work with people who need oxygenation. Some people get sick and go to the intensive care unit, but many I see go home. You can now enter with your family, but the visitation time will be tighter. We try to limit the amount of exposure.
I am very outgoing. Occasionally I go into the room and wrap a little to introduce myself to lighten my mood. I always look at patients like my own. That’s where the connection comes in. When you are nursing, your mind must be there.
In the early days of the pandemic, I was caring for a patient and he was very ill with the virus. He didn’t want to bother anyone, and he didn’t want to help someone take care of him or get out of bed. I said, “OK, let’s try luck, go there and see what I can do.”
I went there, sat down, talked to him, and treated him like my family. We talked about many things. At that time, we couldn’t enter any visitors. He complained, “I can’t see my wife, I want to see her.” So I said, “Why don’t we just FaceTime her? You can see your wife, you can see your dog, and we’re just good You can have a conversation. “
It cheered him up. He started spinning. He made us walk him – lying in bed, so you can be very, very weak.
He said when he left. “I want to treat you to something because you were so kind to me. I want to eat pizza for everyone.” So he ordered pizza and a submarine for everyone. When the pizza came, he wanted a slice. He didn’t like hospital food and didn’t eat much.
He said, “Don’t forget me! If you could sneak in just one slice, you would be the best person in the world!” So I gave him a pepperoni and sausage pizza, and He was just overjoyed.
I brought my iPad to the room, he contacted his wife and he was bragging about pizza. He was really excited. It really made his day and his time has become much easier for him.
It was amazing. Looking back on the situation that didn’t work, I felt really good when I found out that I had a smile on someone’s face. I couldn’t wait to go home and tell my family about it.
He has been there for over two weeks. I had time to get to know him, his wife, and one of his sons. He went home. That is the person who impressed me most.
I love my job and I love making a difference. After working on that COVID-19 floor and fighting this illness, it’s a real honor to see them get better and go home.
