COVID-19 patients receiving some cancer treatments can be infected for several months: Study
(Reuters)-According to a study published Tuesday, patients with COVID-19 who have been treated for cancer that suppresses the immune system may remain contagious and spread the coronavirus for more than two months.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now states that if a patient compromises the immune system, healthcare professionals will follow special precautions, such as wearing a respiratory system instead of a face mask, for the longest time since symptoms appear. It is recommended to isolate the patient for 20 days.
In a new study, researchers analyzed sputum and cotton swab samples from 20 immunosuppressive cancer patients infected with the new coronavirus. They found that three people were contagious, including one who remained contagious for 61 days for more than three weeks after the onset of symptoms.
Three patients had been treated with stem cell transplants or genetically engineered immune cells called CAR T cells within the last 6 months. Two of the three had severe COVID-19. None of them had antibodies to the virus.
Researchers have published in the New England Journal of Medicine that current public health recommendations for patients with COVID-19 with a weak immune system are based on limited data and may need to be revised. It is stated in the letter.
“Several studies have shown that if you are … healthy, the infectivity disappears after the first week of illness, but we know about immunocompromised patients. It’s rare, “says Minikamboji, one of the authors of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center study. “Is 20 days enough, or do we need to take precautions longer?”
