38 prisoners test positive for COVID-19 in Will County Prison: Sheriff

The Will County Sheriff’s Office reported that there were 38 COVID-19-positive prisoners in prison.
Prison officials learned last week that one male prisoner who had been detained since February was “possibly infected with another prisoner in the facility (COVID-19)” without symptoms. Later, I learned that these prisoners were virus-positive. News release of Will County Sheriff’s Office.
“A male prisoner was recently sentenced and was held in a housing unit for five days before being transferred to the Illinois Correctional Authority,” officials said. “When ingested at IDOC, he underwent a rapid (COVID-19) test and was tested positive.”
On the same day, officials said all prisoners in the containment unit had been inspected. Of those prisoners, 38 were positive and 13 were negative.
All exposed prisoners have been quarantined in prisons and will remain quarantined for 14 days, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, officials said.
“All positive cases are treated and closely monitored by institutional physicians. Currently, all positive cases are mild and have no serious underlying condition,” officials said.
According to the news release, sheriff office and prison staff “follow state guidelines and work closely with the Will County Health Department.”
