Nova Scotia’s Sipekne’katik First Nation confirms two cases of COVID-19

Two cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Halifax-Nova Scotia Indigenous Peoples Reserve.
Mike Sack, chief of Sipekne’katik, said public health officials had notified the band of positive results on Wednesday.
According to Sack, the first findings suggest that the first infection occurred outside the community and the virus was transmitted to a second person.
He said a small number of contacts have been identified and contact tracking is underway to help identify others who may have interacted with one of the positive cases.
“I understand and respect privacy, but the community is wondering who it is,” Sack said in an interview Thursday. “We have a small and close community, so everyone is wondering if they have come into contact.”
He said band officials didn’t anticipate the need to close the community at this point, but that would be a difficult choice anyway.
“There are no grocery stores in our community, so people have to leave our community regardless,” Sack said.
The chief said the band council closely monitored the situation and worked directly with state health authorities.
He said he advised members of the community to stay home if possible and follow public health guidelines on hygiene and physical distance.
Nova Scotia reported 17 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of active cases to 127. The majority are in the Halifax area.
Sipekne’katik is about 70 km north of Halifax.
