Outbreaks of bird flu trigger orders to keep all captive herds indoors
Poultry and other captive birds should be stored indoors under strict rules aimed at controlling the spread of bird flu after a series of outbreaks.
The move was ordered by the Supreme Veterinary Officer in England, Scotland and Wales, following cases of “highly infectious” disease. Including the wild..
Beginning December 14, all bird breeders will be required by law to keep their herds indoors or netted as a precautionary measure against bird flu and to take biosecurity measures.
This was after the confirmed outbreak of turkeys in the suburbs of King’s Lynn in Norfolk, with nine cases of birds in captivity in the United Kingdom.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Areas (DEFRA) said all birds on the infected site would be humanely disposed of to limit the spread of the disease.
The UK Public Health Service said the risk to the public from the virus was “very low,” and the Food Standards Agency also said it did not affect the intake of poultry products.
Last month, England, Scotland and Wales were placed in the Bird Flu Prevention Zone (AIPZ), proclaiming restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus.
This means that poultry and captive bird zookeepers must take additional steps before entering the enclosure, such as disinfecting equipment and vehicles, changing clothes and footwear, and restricting access.
Three Supreme Veterinarians, Christine Middlemis, Sheila Voas, and Christian Glossop, advised bird owners to use the next few days to prepare for more stringent measures.
In a joint statement, they said:
“Whether it is a few or thousands of birds, after December 14th, it is legally necessary to keep the birds indoors or take appropriate measures to distinguish them from wild birds.
“We haven’t downplayed this decision, but it’s the best way to protect birds from this advanced infection.”
Wild birds migrating from mainland Europe during the winter can spread the disease to poultry and other captive birds.
One after another Swan death Investigations are being conducted across the UK, allegedly with concerns that it may be related to a wave of bird flu from Europe.
A small outbreak of the H5N8 strain of the virus, which has been evidenced among wild bird populations in Europe, has recently been identified in geese and swans. Gloucestershire, Devon And Dorset..
Cases have also been found in poultry farms In Herefordshire and Cheshire, And the virus H5N2 strain was confirmed Kent last month.
