Coronavirus death: The wife of Guadalupe Lopez, a Chicago 911 dispatcher who died of COVID-19, also died of the virus
Both the husband and wife became infected with COVID-19 within a few weeks, and their three grown-up children and grandchildren were unable to say goodbye.
“My 8-year-old Austin keeps asking if Santa can ask him to bring his father back, and now I have to tell him about my mother,” said the couple’s daughter Erica. Lopez said. “We erected a tree, but none of us can do it, so our friends are coming to decorate the house. It’s very difficult.”
The Lopez family, standing outside the Archer Heights house where they grew up, remember their parents Guadalupe and Maria as loving and diligent.
Guadalupe, also known as the Loupe, was a longtime 911 dispatcher at Chicago’s Emergency Management Agency and was commemorated earlier this week. Maria ran an income tax business in Little Village.
They both went to the hospital on November 8th, where the loupe died a week later. Maria held up a little longer, but also lost the fight at COVID-19 on Friday. They were both in their 50s.
“While my mother was in the hospital, the last conversation I had with her was on the phone,” said her son Andy Lopez. “I told her I missed her and loved her. That was almost it.”
“Knowing that they are no longer suffering and being with each other brings some relief and peace,” said their other son Ricardo Lopez.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, more than 13,000 people have died from COVID-related complications in Illinois. More than 200 souls, including Maria, reported just on Saturday. That’s why I hope it’s worth it if the children keep raising their voices and their stories help save the life of just one person.
“There’s a king-sized bedroom there, and they’ll never come back. That’s what I want the world to know,” Ricardo said.
Since their story was first published, the Lopez family has said they are flooded with support from every corner of the city. Now they want to express their heartfelt gratitude for everyone’s love, but above all, thank the doctors and nurses for taking care of their parents last month.
