Missing credit card payments can be an early sign of dementia
A new study found that the lack of credit card and loan payments could be an early sign of dementia years before diagnosis.

The study examined consumer credit report data from a broad data pool of more than 81,000 Medicare recipients in the United States from 1999 to 2018.

“At the height of our results, we found that dementia accounted for 5% to 20% of overpayments in people who eventually developed dementia.”
She added that “dementia turned out to be one of the most important” in this age group, while there are “many other factors” that can cause payments to be missed.
Economic symptoms, an early indicator of dementia, are not a new concept, but Nicholas says the study may help people to recognize early that they may be showing signs of dementia. He explained.
“Financial competence, or difficulty in financial decision-making, was an early marker, and it has long been known to predict later dementia diagnoses,” she said.
“Early detection of this allows financial institutions to be tidied up and provide some support or intervention early, even if there is no cure for dementia, before people make catastrophic mistakes. It’s very helpful to do so. “
