Health officials have declared an outbreak of COVID-19 on a mink farm after eight people tested positive for the disease in surgery in Fraser Valley, British Columbia.

Fraser Health said in a statement that it is screening people involved in unnamed farms.

Those who test positive for COVID-19 or who are in close contact with employees or farm owners are said to be self-quarantined.

Fraser Health says health officials and WorkSafe BC personnel are on the scene to mitigate the COVID-19 epidemic.

Fraser Health states that the BC Health Act has ordered mink farms to restrict the transportation of animals, goods and products.

In October, Canadian mink breeders announced that they would step up farm safety measures to avoid the catastrophic COVID-19 outbreak that has plagued European and American breeders.

Infections on mink farms in Europe and the United States indicate that animals are susceptible to COVID-19. Canadian breeders are already suffering from falling fur prices and losses from the Chinese market.

Danish breeders have euthanized 15 million minks over concerns about mutated versions of the virus that have spread among animals. Spanish mink farmers have eliminated about 100,000 people. In the United States, the virus spread rapidly across farms in the state, killing nearly 10,000 minks in COVID-19 throughout Utah.
