An 86-year-old British woman who lost her husband to Covid-19 in April was looking forward to going shopping with the world’s first Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine against the virus on Tuesday. Bus again.
Gil Rogers last met her husband in mid-March at the care facility where he lived. Then a pandemic broke out and she couldn’t visit him, and he died in late April.

“The death certificate showed some things, but Covid-19 also,” Rogers said in a BBC radio interview shortly before vaccination.
She is sad alone as her children and other relatives have avoided contact with her for fear of exposing her to the virus.
“It was pretty hard,” she said, her voice cracked.
Rogers, who lives near Brighton in the south of England, said he spent most of the year alone, avoiding shops as much as possible and avoiding public transport altogether.

She said she received a phone call over the weekend and immediately answered “yes” when she offered an early promise to get the vaccine on Tuesday, the first day of national expansion in the UK.
“I don’t have to be too careful. I don’t have to worry too much. I might go to more shops and if I’m lucky I could get on public transport,” she said.
When asked if she had any doubts about the safety of the vaccine, she replied, “No, not at all.”
She said she contacted the BBC because she knew there were people with concerns and thought that talking about her situation might help them overcome those questions.
“That’s why I contacted you because I thought there might be people who would help me have it, and probably didn’t have it.”
