Experts advise on immunity passports
When traveling to many locations, COVID-19 quarantine or inspection is required before and after arrival.
Starting Thursday, Iceland will be able to skip all COVID-19 infections that prove to have recovered. But so far, travel from the United States to the country is not yet permitted.
So are these so-called immune passports a good idea?
Dr. Ania Wazimberg of Mount Sinai has been studying COVID-19 antibody since March. Her team tested more than 80,000 people in the New York area and found that the majority of people who had COVID-19 formed moderate or high levels of antibodies.
“Almost everyone has maintained antibody levels since March and April. There is a slight decrease, but overall, antibody levels have been maintained,” said Wajnberg.
However, it is not entirely clear how long the immunity lasts and how good the defense against COVID-19 is.
Wajnberg says there isn’t much data on whether people with antibodies may still have enough to spread the virus.
The World Health Organization advises against immune passports. It is said that antibodies alone do not provide sufficient evidence of immunity.
“We know that many or most people may have some protection, so this is a safer way than just opening the door and expecting the best. I don’t think it’s an unreasonable way to start opening up, “Wajnberg said.
The chief epidemiologist in Iceland says he believes that anyone infected with COVID-19 should not be allowed to travel freely thereafter.
Critics of the immune passport have warned that they could reward infected reckless people after ignoring the rules of COVID-19, or even deprive us of our medical privacy.
