At least 200 minks died after COVID-19 outbreak at BC Far Farm
Vancouver-At least 200 minks have died after the COVID-19 outbreak on a fur farm in Fraser Valley, British Columbia.
While the coronavirus is likely the cause of death, a spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture told CTV News that testing is still underway.
The 200 dead animals represent about 1.3% of the approximately 15,000 mink on the farm, and it is unknown how many others were infected with the virus.
“Most of the minks on the farm appear to be asymptomatic and understand that mortality has declined recently,” the ministry said in an email statement.
The government refused to name the farm, unlike many poultry factories and other British Columbia companies that experienced the outbreak. On Friday, the ministry quoted “public security reasons” for the decision to keep the company name private.
Last weekend, local health officials confirmed that eight workers on the farm tested positive for COVID-19. The property was subsequently placed under quarantine.
