Scientists have deciphered the chain of molecular responses in human lung cells to infection with the new coronavirus. This is an advance that may help identify clinically approved drugs that can be reused for the treatment of COVID-19.

In this study, published in the journal Molecular Cell, we evaluated manipulated cells in the air sacs of the human lung using accurate mass spectrometry techniques that can characterize the molecules present in the sample.

However, scientists have discovered that SARS-CoV-2 disrupts lung cells and causes abnormal changes in the amount of protein in these cells and the frequency of protein phosphorylation.

According to scientists, these abnormal changes help the virus multiply, eventually destroying cells and causing extensive lung damage.

Upon infection, the coronavirus begins to rapidly utilize the cell’s core resources. Core resources are otherwise required for normal cell growth and function.
