Nearly 11,000 new COVID-19 cases.The valley has exceeded 8,000 since March | Coronavirus
Pennsylvania enrolled more than 10,000 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday for the fifth consecutive day, and state health officials confirmed 129 deaths associated with the new coronavirus.
COVID-19 hospitalizations across Pennsylvania continue to approach 6,000 on Sunday, when the State Department of Health announced 10,864 cases, including 266 cases across the Valley.
Across the region, there were 128 new cases in Montour County, 69 in Northumberland County, 48 in Union County, and 21 in Snyder County. Sunday totals have pushed 8,000 through the valley since March.
An additional 30 Pennsylvanians were hospitalized on Saturday, bringing the total to 5,970, more than double the April peak of 2,800.
Across the state, an additional 129 people died, and at least 100 people died for the fifth straight day. Locally, four new deaths have occurred, all in Northumberland County.
As of noon on Saturday, there were 5,970 residents in the state hospitalized for complications from the new coronavirus, an increase of 30 from Saturday. Of that total, 1,227 people were treated in the intensive care unit, an increase of 18 from Saturday, and 672 on ventilator, a decrease of three. On September 20, 400 Pennsylvania patients were hospitalized throughout the state. In addition, DOH reports that 603 adult ICU beds were open throughout the state on Friday. This has decreased by three.
The number of locally hospitalized patients has increased from 10 to 180. The Gaisinger Medical Center in Danville was treating 120 patients (up 4 per day), including 36 in the ICU. The hospital was also treating 21 patients on mechanical ventilation. At Geisinger Shamokin, 11 patients were being treated, including 2 in the ICU. At the Evangelical Community Hospital, 49 patients were admitted, including 10 in the ICU and 2 in the ventilator. According to state data, there are a total of 18 adult ICU beds available at three facilities (11 in Geisinger in Danville, 5 in Evangelical, and 2 in Geinsgar-Shamokin).
Nursing home
At the Watsontown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 97 of the 125 residents were positive and one recovered to normal, according to the latest information from the facility on Friday. Sixty staff members tested positive, 42 of whom returned to work. Two tests are pending at the facility. According to a spokesman for a company, 15 people were killed at the facility.
The facility reports that there are 60 active cases in Mount Carmel Nursing and Rehabilitation, with 38 residents and 22 staff. The center has 136 confirmed cases, including 88 residents.
There were at least 1,234 cases in the Valley Nursing Home. The state did not update the county-by-county database of cases in long-term care facilities. In Northumberland County, 11 facilities totaled 903 (714 inhabitants and 189 staff), with 131 deaths. In Snyder County, 122 cases (103 residents, 19 staff) occurred and 18 died at two facilities. In Montour County, there were 118 cases (92 residents, 26 staff) and 8 deaths in 4 locations. There were 91 cases (71 residents, 20 staff) and 5 deaths at 7 facilities in Union County.
Prisons, state facilities
The Coal Township State Correctional Facility (SCI) has 77 active cases — 45 prisoners and 32 employees. Throughout the state, there were 4,060 active cases across 24 state prisons, including 2,927 prisoners. Since Friday, there have been cases of 416 new prisoners.
The Selinsgrove Center has 74 active cases, including 20 and 54 staff members in service. At Danville State Hospital, 13 residents and 11 staff members had active cases. There were also at least 10 active COVID cases at the Montour County male and female juvenile detention facility, including eight staff members of the female unit.
There were 143 cases across the four federal prison locations in Union County, the same total as Saturday.
In Allenwood’s low security unit, there were 32 active incidents, including 23 prisoners and 9 personnel.
Allenwood’s US Prison (USP) has no active prison cases, along with 14 employee cases. At Allenwood’s Federal Correctional Facility for Medium Security, there were 61 active cases, 47 of whom were prisoners. USP-Lewisberg (7) has one less staff case, but there are 29 active prison cases in prison, all new since Friday.
