The medical system has made history by immunizing the first person in the United States against COVID-19 when Pfizer’s drug was injected into Sandra Lindsay, an intensive care nurse at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Northwell received a limited supply of thousands of doses of Pfizer’s vaccine (distributed to eight hospitals). This requires two injections every 21 days. The vaccine is 95% effective against infection with minimal side effects and is working on messenger RNA (mRNA) technology that has been developed for several years. mRNA tells cells in the body to make different proteins.

To vaccinate team members, Northwell has prepared a three-step prioritization matrix to help deploy the vaccine to more than 74,000 team members. The plan takes into account an individual’s work / geographic area, departmental specialty, job, and age.

To prepare, Northwell has invested in the procurement of a freezer on the 20th to 70th floors. It can store about 250,000 doses each. Northwell has also stocked up additional needles, gloves and swabs to help distribute the vaccine when ready, and the health system has been rolling out in collaboration with state and federal authorities.
