Veterans and VA Medical Center Healthcare Workers Receive Initial COVID-19 Vaccine
Forty staff and six veterans in the care facility were given the first of two shots of the newly released vaccine.
New Orleans — Several veterans and dozens of medical staff at the New Orleans Veterans Hospital were vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccine on Monday afternoon. This is a historic moment that medical leaders call a deadly pandemic turning point.
Within the hospital basketball gym, 40 staff members were given the first of two shots of the newly released vaccine. Six veterans in the care facility were also shot. Christine Aucoin, a registered nurse at Metairie, was the first person to be shot at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“It’s a big honor for me,” Aucoin said. “I didn’t expect to be the first person, but I’m here. I can’t wait for this to come behind us.”
VA officials say that the oldest and highest-risk veterans and staff in frequent contact with them are prioritized, followed by other low-risk groups.
Eventually, all veterans who have been cared for by the Department of Veterans Affairs will be vaccinated.
Ultimately, 480 people could be shot per day, according to Caitlin Martin Klinger, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Department of Veterans Affairs New Orleans.
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first COVID-19 vaccine. The Department of Veterans Affairs says it has a limited amount to start and is working with the CDC and other federal partners to develop a phased plan. According to the VA website, staff will carefully monitor all people who receive the COVID-19 vaccine, which was tested in 44,000 people before distribution, for reactions or side effects.
“Many other vaccines that didn’t have Operation Warp Speed took a long time to develop, and they were developed so quickly that this really shines a light at the end of the tunnel,” Klinger said. He said. “It’s like a vaccine superstar. If you get your two doses, you have a 95% chance of being protected. Those are some great odds.”
Everyone who talked to the vaccinated person on Monday said they felt a little pressure after the injection, but Aucoin and others said it wasn’t worse than the flu shot. Aucoin recommends that others be vaccinated if possible.
