COVID Vaccine Illinois: Chicago Hospital Waiting for First COVID Vaccine Scheduled Tuesday

Chicago (WLS)-The first shipment of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine has arrived in Illinois. Delivery is scheduled from now to Wednesday at various hospitals and other refrigeration facilities.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot tweeted a photo of the vaccine arriving in Chicago late Monday night. Officials said the first healthcare workers in Chicago will be vaccinated at Loretto Hospital on the west side of Chicago on Tuesday morning.

This first vaccine shipment will prioritize the 50 Illinois Country, which has the highest per capita COVID mortality rate. This includes the suburban Cook County, where the first batch of over 20,000 doses is expected to arrive this week.

“We sincerely hope that Tuesday, December 14th will be the beginning of the flagging moment,” said Tony Prekwinkle, President of Cook County.

So far, the first vaccinations appear to take place on Wednesday in both the suburbs of Cook County and two public hospitals in the county. The vaccine is divided into 15 hospitals and is given to healthcare professionals and people living in assistive health care facilities.

Health officials in Cook County said doses would be assigned to suburban hospitals based on the number of key personnel and how COVID-19 adversely affected staff and patients.

“We need to vaccinate as many people as possible,” said Dr. Rachel Rubin of the Cook County Public Health Service. “70% is the absolute minimum.”

Vaccine shipments are sent directly to the hospital that manages them, but also to the county’s ultra-low temperature storage facility to hold the surplus until the hospital is ready.

Nearly 3,000 people have died of COVID-19 in the suburbs of Cook County alone. With a population of about 2.5 million, many of whom are low-income, planning to deploy to the entire community is something the health sector is already working on. For now, they are focused on inoculating as much health as possible first. Willing to be a care worker.

“First dose to 20,000 workers. Not enough to cover 1a. Not enough to cover all health care workers in 1a’s hospital,” said Kiran, Cook County Public Health Service.・ Dr. Joshi said. .. “We expect it to take at least four to five weeks to get past the first hospital-based wave.”

Also, although there is no specific schedule for vaccination to be available throughout the Cook County community, health officials have stated that priority will reach these low-income areas and potential access to most people. It states that it is to identify the location of vaccination.

“Whether it’s a YMCA or a local school because we understand it’s the center of the community … we have specific locations where we can set up vaccination sites, especially in the south and west. I’m identifying it. The suburbs. “

In addition to these 20,000 doses, both Chicago county hospitals (Stroger and Provident) will receive 1,000 doses this week. Vaccinations for employees there will begin on Wednesday and end on December 24th.

Cook County Health Authorities Discuss Vaccine Plan

The health department in the northern suburbs of Lake County is waiting for the first shipment of 6,000 shipments to be distributed to six hospitals.

“What we do is encourage them to really focus on the individuals who work in the ICU: doctors, nurses, medical assistants, etc.,” said Mark, Executive Director of the Lake County Health Department. Pfister says.

The goal is to inoculate these workers within 5 days. This does not cover all healthcare professionals, but more shipments should arrive each week.

Lake County is already preparing for the time when the vaccine will be generally available, probably by early spring.

“That’s great news for us, as more than 100,000 people have already registered on our website to get the vaccine,” Fister said. “Our goal is 80% of the population, or 560,000.”

Town Hall: Doctors Answer COVID-19 Vaccine Questions

Pfizer began shipping vaccines from its Kalamazoo, Michigan plant on Sunday morning within 48 hours of the FDA granting an emergency use authorization.

“I was impressed with the impact of science. I was impressed with the impact on patients around the world,” said Mike McDermott, Global Supply President of Pfizer. “I think this vaccine today gives us promise and light at the end of the tunnel.”

Valuable cargo was then loaded onto Grand Rapids planes for national transportation. Vaccine tracking and security are top priorities. UPS machines equipped with a special ultra-low temperature freezer will vaccinate nationwide.

In the air, the FAA gives priority permits to planes carrying cargo. On the road, cargo has escorts.

“Pfizer has tracking equipment on every package, but FedEx also has its own tracking equipment. [there is] “There are a couple of layers of tracking going on, and I want to know where everything is and be able to explain it,” said Hani Mahamasani, an expert in logistics systems at Northwestern University.

Mahmassani emphasized that post-shipment issues can occur and that distribution has its own challenges.

“The local handling aspect is where I’m much more concerned,” Mahmassani said. “The more hands you touch it, the more often it goes wrong.”

Federal officials said shipments were staggered, arriving at 145 distribution centers on Monday, 425 on Tuesday, and the remaining 66 on Wednesday.

Every second is important when you leave the shipping container. Within 90 seconds, the vaccine should be transferred to these special freezers or placed in a standard refrigerator to thaw. When unzipped, it can be stored for up to 5 days.

When out of the refrigerator, the vial is immediately diluted 5 times and should be infused within 2 hours. Otherwise it will rot. The first dose will be given on Monday.

Mr. Mahmasani said he was cautiously optimistic.

“At this point, it looks like it’s going according to plan,” he said.

As healthcare professionals and nursing homes are at the top of the list of vaccinations, it can take months to become available throughout the community. There are many unresolved issues about how that happens.

Already extend vaccination campaigns beyond medical facilities to city and state officials, worried that many will be left behind in the cold in cities where three in ten do not have access to cars I am asking.

“We have DFSS facilities, we have a warming center, we have a park district, we have a church, and we can make everyone in Chicago vaccinated,” Aldo said. Byron Lopez.

The city’s public health service, meanwhile, remains deliberately ambiguous, saying it’s ready to accept, store, and distribute vaccine doses on arrival, but exactly when that happens. Does not say.

The FDA reiterated that it believes that the potential benefits of vaccines outweigh the potential risks.

An independent committee also advised the CDC and recommended that people over the age of 16 be vaccinated.

Experts said it was still unclear if vaccinated people could still spread COVID-19.
