Wisconsin nursing facility to be vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccine by the end of December
Madison, Wisconsin (WMTV)-As vaccine shipments continue to arrive in Wisconsin, the State Department of Health states that the first dose will be sent to skilled nursing and long-term care facilities by the end of the month.
On Monday, the Wisconsin Department of Health launched the National Pharmacy Program. This is a partnership between CDC and national pharmacy chains, including Walgreens and CVS.
“We receive the vaccine assigned to Wisconsin and reassign it to this program to provide the vaccine to the pharmacy chain,” said Julie Willems Vandik, Deputy Secretary of DHS.
The pharmacy then enters the facility and vaccinates both residents and staff who choose to vaccinate with COVID. This process will start within two weeks.
Timing is important now. This happens when cases of coronavirus and deaths in Wisconsin nursing homes reach record highs. “Wisconsin was pretty good at first, but it’s not there anymore. We’re really in bad shape,” said Helen Marks Dicks, advocacy director at AARP Wisconsin.
