The first Alabama COVID-19 vaccinated people call it a “ray”
I hope I arrived in Alabama on Tuesday with a white cardboard box and a glass bottle.
In Birmingham, nearly 11,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine were taken to UAB Hospital, packed snugly and supercooled with dry ice.
About 198 miles away, Dr. Walter Doti pulled up the sleeve of a blue scrub when Chris Holland, the head of medical services, guided a needle to his arm at the Southeast Health Medical Center.
Dotty is the first Alabama to receive the vaccine, as hospitals throughout the state began administering nearly 41,000 doses to front-line workers in the first round of vaccination.
Doctors explained their expectations when he and Dr. Ravinaramos were preparing for their first vaccination at South East Health on Tuesday morning.
After months of treating the illness, taking precautions in the room was exciting for Southeastern staff. However, expectations were also bittersweet. The current COVID surge in Alabama, initially concentrated in northern counties, is now beginning to flow south, Doty said. As hospitalizations in Alabama continue to increase, the number of wire glasses is increasing again.
“It’s a mixed feeling to know that just because we have a vaccine doesn’t mean that things are done. That doesn’t mean that our mitigation measures will stop.” Dotty said. “These things are going on. This isn’t the end of the pandemic, but hopefully this is the ray we have to look forward to on the horizon.”
In Birmingham, dry ice vapor was filtered upwards when Associate Chief Pharmacy Officer Tomie Ann Boackle moved the vial pallet from the white FedEx box to the UAB freezer. UAB will start vaccination on Wednesday.
Her voice is emotional and unpacking the vaccine is one of the most exciting days of her nearly 23-year career at UAB, Boackle said.
“Knowing what the virus has done to our patients, and how many people have been affected by it, and knowing that this may be the next step in ending this pandemic. Is very important, “Boackle said.
This week in Alabama, the Pfizer vaccine will be given a little less than 41,000 times. All of these are reserved for the initial vaccination of high-risk medical workers. Allocations cover only about 10% to 11% of state health care workers.
A second dose of the first round of recipients, currently held by the federal government, will be shipped within the next week. On the other hand, due to less stringent cooling requirements, the Moderna vaccine, which can be shipped more widely, has been approved and will be available soon.
On Tuesday, the Alabama Public Health Service confirmed that the first 15 hospitals had been vaccinated.
- Athens-Limestone Hospital, Athens;
- Baptist Medical Center South, Montgomery;
- Kalman Community Medical Center, Kalman;
- DCH Regional Medical Center, Tuscaloosa;
- Opera Squid East Alabama Medical Center;
- Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville;
- Lake Martin Community Hospital, Dadeville;
- Mobile clinic, mobile;
- Providence Hospital, Mobile;
- Southeast Health, Dothan;
- Spring Hill Memorial Hospital, Mobile;
- Thomas Hospital, Fairhope;
- UAB Hospital, Birmingham;
- USA Health University Hospital, Mobile;
- USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital, Mobile.
Alabama health officials are preparing to roll out the vaccine more widely in the coming months, including the fight against vaccine hesitation. No one in the state needs to be vaccinated, and authorities say educating the public is an important factor in vaccination.
“Obviously, people are nervous, but if it helps to get people who have been watching the disease for months to accept it, it gives some people some relief. I hope that, “Dotty said. “This is our solution. You can see what the death toll is now across the country. Vaccinated people can go back to everything we want to do. This is there. It’s a route to get to. That’s why I felt it was really important to get ahead and be a vaccine advocate. “
But despite the hope that the vaccine has brought Alabama, the dark days may still come. There are not enough vaccine products to quickly deploy a widespread vaccine. It can take weeks, or even months, to be vaccinated for all state health care workers and the most vulnerable residents, such as the population of nursing homes. The average healthy Alabama may not see the dose until the summer of 2021.
Meanwhile, Alabama’s medical capacity is declining amid an unprecedented surge in hospitalization caused by the widespread community spread of the virus. The hospital reduced non-urgent procedures and turned to retired staff for help as state healthcare professionals adopted an emergency rule this weekend that allowed out-of-state doctors to practice in Alabama.
More than 301,000 Alabama people have been diagnosed with the virus, with 4,124 reported dead as of Tuesday. Both UAB and Baptist Health reported record high hospitalizations on Tuesday, with 2,353 Alabamas hospitalized in the state.
“I don’t want people to see these images of the vaccine flowing into Alabama, so assume that it’s all over and you can stop wearing the mask. How many months before it’s safe enough? It will cost you, “said Dr. Scott Harris, director of state health, last week. “We want people to expect the vaccine to be just the first step back to normal, not the last step.”
