Ohio Pharmacy, Nursing Home Preparing for COVID-19 Vaccine
Tristate pharmacies, including Walgreens and CVS locations in many areas, are preparing to vaccinate some of Ohio’s most vulnerable people by the weekend. It may seem like a major milestone for COVID-19, but it can take months before it is safe to return a visitor to a nursing home.
“We are very grateful and very excited to move this forward,” said Pete Van Rankle, Executive Director of the Ohio Healthcare Association.
After months of losing in nursing homes across the state, this week we had some good news from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.
“We are looking at people in nursing homes,” he said. “We know that more than half of the dead have come out of nursing homes. We know that we need to protect the group as soon as possible.”
Van Runkle said it was not immediately clear whether nursing homes would be included in the early stages of vaccination, but said older patients were prioritized with federal levels and the governor.
“We have hundreds of nursing homes, so it will take a while,” Dewin said.
From now on, 88,000 of the first 98,000 vaccines available will be directed to workers and residents, but like everyone else, people will have to be willing to get vaccinated.
“Our members report a lot,’Hey, there are a lot of people hesitating at best,'” said Van Land Cruiser.
He said he expected his opinion to change over time.
“We are working on those things and trying to get as many people as possible vaccinated,” said Van Rankle.
Pharmacies with the ability to store the vaccine at the required temperature are responsible for administering shots in the field to ensure that everyone also receives a second dose.
Van Rankle said external factors play a major role in the return to normal for people in nursing homes and their families.
“We may look good enough to start a visit,” he said. “It’s really all driven by those numbers.”
Since there is no time frame, Van Land Cruiser said it may not be until summer, but he encourages his loved ones to continue to have hope.
“At least in this way, there is a feeling that this has an end,” he said. “You can go back to not using all the PPE, which allows for more visits, no need to test, and eventually no use at all.”
Van Rankle said each nursing home resident and worker had an observation period after the vaccine was given to ensure that they did not suffer from serious side effects.
