Oxford-based Enesi Pharma has developed a device that can be vaccinated subcutaneously with little pain to the patient. The vaccine is a small, hard rod with a diameter of 0.85 mm and a length of 3.5 mm, with a tip. Enesi’s device, called ImplaVax, injects a stick into the patient.
Importantly, solid doses do not require the vaccine to be kept cold. This is especially beneficial for countries with warm climates and for pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Modana who need to keep the mRNA Covid vaccine at extreme temperatures.
There is no risk of needle breakage, it is easy to administer, and there is no need for doctors or nurses to perform the procedure. It’s also possible that one ImplaVax manages two jabs, avoiding the need for boosters.
Enesi and Imperial have already tested ImplaVax in animals using a DNA-based vaccine. The success there led researchers to apply the technique to the RNA vaccine developed by Professor Robin Chatock of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London and his team. The vaccine is currently in Phase I / II clinical trials in humans.
