SLO County gives healthcare workers the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine
San Luis Obispo County, CA-Five front-line healthcare workers were among the first residents to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in San Luis Obispo on Friday.
The county public health said this moment marked the beginning of local vaccine distribution.
The county plans to vaccinate health care workers first, and CVS provides vaccines to people in care facilities.
The county will continue to distribute the vaccine in stages until it is widely available to those who want to receive the vaccine throughout the county.
“The light at the end of the tunnel is brighter than it is today,” said Dr. Penny Bolenstein, a county public health officer. “Our front-line healthcare professionals and some of the most vulnerable residents of our community will receive significant protection through safe and effective vaccines. This is a COVID-19 pandemic. It’s one of the most important tools we have to end it, but the fight isn’t over. We need to keep reducing the number of cases in the area. “
The first recipients of the vaccine are: Alec Fratos, a firefighter and emergency medical officer at the San Luis Obispo Fire Department. Mara Howard, a blood dialysis nurse at the Davita Dialysis Center. Dr. Matthew Williams, an emergency physician at the Sierra Vista Community Medical Center. Jennifer O’Connor, Emergency Department Nurse at French Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Daisy Irano, Medical Director of SLO County Mental Health Facility.
“Vaccines help us stay safe and keep our families safe because we continue to provide daily care to people in the communities in need of us,” says O’Connor.
The county public health service has been vaccinated for 1,950 doses and will receive more in the coming weeks. The ministry said it is working with partners such as hospitals and EMS organizations to vaccinate front-line healthcare workers throughout the county.
Care facilities must be vaccinated first by the end of the month, and other high-risk individuals can be expected to be vaccinated near March 2021. The general public can expect the vaccine to be available later that year.
