Limit the spread of “highly pathogenic” avian influenza in Scotland
Scotland’s BIRDKEEPERS cautions against maximizing biosecurity and separating herds from wild birds after avian influenza H5N8 has been identified in a small poultry herd from a farm on Sunday Island in the Orkney Islands.
Experimental results on samples taken from the herd have since identified the strain as highly pathogenic. Appropriate restrictions are imposed on facilities and identified contact facilities to limit the further spread of the disease.
Around the infected facility, a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone have been set up to limit the risk of disease spread. Within these zones, various controls are in place, including poultry, carcasses, eggs, used poultry debris, and restrictions on manure movement.
In other parts of Scotland and the United Kingdom, producers and bird zookeepers are required to comply with bird breeding orders that came into effect on 14 December, or to keep them separately from wild birds and follow biosecurity procedures.
Mairi Gujeong, Minister of Local Affairs and Natural Environment, said: Citizens should remain vigilant and report the discovery of dead wild birds. ”

“It is important for zookeepers to take steps to improve biosecurity and protect birds from disease.
