Blue Earth County Residents Die at COVID-19 | Local News
Mankato — The COVID-19 death confirmed in Blue Earth County on Monday was the 37th death to date associated with a disease in December in south-central Minnesota.
Residents were in the mid-to-late 90s, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. They were among the 22 total COVID deaths confirmed throughout the state on Monday.
December is moving at a pace that breaks the November record for most COVIDs that occurred in a month in nine counties in south-central Minnesota.
In 21 days, 37 people died in December, compared to a total of 40 people in November. In total, the total number of deaths over the two months is 77 out of 147 deaths from pandemics in the South Central region.
Pandemic deaths in Blue Earth County have increased to 25, the third highest of the nine regional counties. Nicollet County had the highest number of COVID deaths in 30 and Brown County had 26.
Regional counties were also added up for the 84 new COVID cases identified on Monday. The complete list of new cases in the regional county is as follows:
- Faribaud County — 19
- Blue Earth County — 18
- Martin County — 12
- Brown County — 10
- Le Sur County-7
- Nicollet County — 5
- Watonwan County — 5
- Waseca County — 4
- Sibley County — 4
With 22 confirmed deaths across the state, the number of deaths from a pandemic in Minnesota has increased to 4,872. As in south-central Minnesota, the state as a whole had a particularly deadly December for COVID.
However, other key indicators show clear signs of hope. New daily cases and hospitalizations continue to recede from their peak in late November to early December.
The Health Department has posted 1,998 newly identified or possible COVID cases. This is the lowest number since late October and is part of a week or more of relatively moderate new cases. Authorities expected a surge due to Thanksgiving rallies, but that hasn’t happened yet.
The number of active cases confirmed in Minnesota has dropped to about 21,000, the lowest since November 4.
Officials said that as of Sunday, 1,040 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 and 237 were in need of intensive care. It’s still pretty high, but the seven-day trend for new hospitalizations has fallen to levels not seen since early November.
The percentage of tests that return positive to COVID-19, an indicator that authorities use to determine the level of virus spreading in the state, continues to decline. The 7-day positive trend is about 6.7%, more than half of the recent peak. A percentage of 5% or more is considered.
State health officials warn that if people are not vigilant as the New Year holidays approach, the improvement in the situation can change dramatically. They continue to encourage people to wear masks in outdoor meeting spaces and social distances to stop the spread of COVID.
