COVID-19 could overwhelm Pima County’s healthcare system within 3 weeks | Arizona Coronavirus
Tucson, AZ (3TV / CBS 5)- Public health officials in Pima County have issued disastrous warnings that continued growth in COVID-19 infections could overwhelm the healthcare system within three weeks.
The advisory was published on Monday, a few days before families usually meet for Christmas.
“Due to the high community-wide spread that occurs in Pima County, we have exceeded the critical level of hospital bed use,” health officials said in a recommendation.
Health sector models show that tense health resources are deteriorating. Unless the infection rate declines, urgent and ICU resource demand will overwhelm the Pima County healthcare system within the next few weeks.
TMC has already made adjustments such as canceling some elective surgery, increasing the ratio of nurses to patients, and refusing 80 direct hospitalizations last week.
“It’s no longer just COVID, I don’t know if I think it’s a real problem. The patients who fill these hospitals are absolutely real, if they have a heart attack, if they have a car accident. Or, if the appendix ruptures, we may not receive the timely care needed to save lives if we cannot control the virus, “said Dr. Teresa Karen, director of health at Pima County. Stated.
