Houston vaccinated 6,000 COVID-19 vaccines for firefighters and healthcare professionals
Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on Monday that he would give the city 6,000 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to inoculate firefighters and health care workers.
The fire department and health department receive 3,000 doses each, and priority is given to employees who interact directly with COVID-19 patients.
“I’ll pick it up this week or next week, and I’m ready to pick up the inventory either way,” said Fire Chief Sam Pena. “We have the tools and equipment to store it properly and have plans to manage them for employees who want to take advantage of the opportunity.”
The Federal Food and Drug Administration approved an emergency use authorization for the Moderna vaccine on Friday. The drug company plans to administer 20 million doses by the end of December. This was the second vaccine approved following the Pfizer-BioNTech version on December 11. A 207,000 dose of the drug was distributed in Texas throughout the weekend.
