Should the public be worried?
Madison, Wisconsin (WMTV)-Scientists are studying a new strain of coronavirus that may be more contagious than others following its discovery in the United Kingdom.
So far, US experts have stated that this variant has not been identified, and that this variant is not a source of concern at this time.
“I think people should interpret this as meaning that the virus can sometimes be unpredictable,” said Dr. Nasia Safdar, UW-Health’s Director of Infection Control. “This is not the first time a variant has occurred with this virus.”
Scientists said the virus strain is highly contagious and spreads faster than other forms.
“So far, that doesn’t seem to have any additional negative effects,” Safdar said.
She said many strains have emerged in the last decade and scientists are adapting and making changes as needed.
“I think the technology currently available will make that possible,” she said.
At a press conference on Monday, Wisconsin health officials said the covid vaccine should be effective against new strains.
“We are paying attention to this when it comes to viral mutations,” said Julie Willems van Dyck, deputy secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Health. “Peplomer, the basic constituent of the virus, is part of the virus, and the method of making this virus remains effective.”
Authorities said RNA viruses are common to mutate. It can be compared to the flu.
“He has to be vaccinated every year because it changes little by little,” said Thomas Haupt, a DHS division of public health research scientists and epidemiologists.
Health officials said treatments and medications could change over time, as the coronavirus is still unknown.
“This is the puzzle that pandemics and pandemic viruses present to us,” Van Dyck said.
Scientists are still researching and evaluating variants of the virus to find the best way to fight the virus.
