VA Hospital staff receive first round of COVID vaccine in New Orleans

New Orleans — The first week of the Covid-19 vaccine was deployed at a veterans’ hospital. New Orleans, one of the five VA facilities in the country that administers the vaccine, performed better than expected as hundreds of healthcare workers and a small number of veterans. Last week I received the first shot of two shots in a few busy and often emotional days.
“It worked better than I expected. I’m planning and praying for things to go perfectly,” said Caitlin Martin Klinger, Deputy Chief of Staff at VA New Orleans. “The staff who took care of the first Covid-19 patient in Louisiana stepped up to get the vaccine, so I got goose bumps and a lot of happy tears.”

“We feel that if we can deliver this faster, they want us to ship it faster,” Klinger said. “Did anyone have any side effects you know?” Asked Paul Dudley of WWLTV. “Not much. There were a few staff members who didn’t eat that morning and I felt a little staggered. We gave them juice and they felt fine,” Klinger added. ..
Like hospitals in other regions, VA follows the CDC guidelines for virus spread. That is, the highest-risk patients and healthcare professionals go first, then VA begins to release the virus to other healthier veterinarians. It is still unknown when that will happen.
“The real answer to that is to do it as soon as possible,” Klinger said.
According to Klinger, all 1,000 people who were vaccinated with VA last week will be vaccinated for the second time in the coming weeks. So, in theory, everyone should be fully protected by the first week of January.
