The COVID-19 pandemic is something everyone keeps in mind for much of 2020. But at this time of year, it’s important to remember the flu. As a parent, the best thing you can do to protect your child from the flu is to vaccinate your child before the flu begins to spread in our community.
Getting the flu is more dangerous for children than the common cold. Every year, millions of children get the flu and thousands of children are hospitalized.
Does my child have the flu?
Influenza usually begins more suddenly and worse than a cold and usually lasts 7 to 14 days. Symptoms are:
Fever and chills
headache
Body pain and pain
Weakness and malaise
sore throat
Runny nose or stuffy nose
Cough (usually dry)
Influenza vaccine
Influenza vaccines are the best way to prevent influenza and its complications. Even if the vaccine does not completely prevent the flu, it can reduce the risk of serious illness that requires hospitalization. Last year’s flu vaccine was 45% effective.

Therefore, if the flu virus is still prevalent, it is not too late to get vaccinated.
The flu vaccine is very safe. It does not cause the flu. Side effects are usually mild and include the following:
• Mild pain in which the needle enters the arm for 1-2 days.
• Mild fever or pain during the first day or two after vaccination.
If you do not give your child ibuprofen or acetaminophen before or immediately after vaccination, it is best practice as it can affect the effectiveness of the vaccine. After vaccination, wait at least 6 hours for pain and fever to relieve.
Influenza vaccination is especially important this season as influenza and COVID-19 cause similar common signs and symptoms. Influenza vaccination may reduce symptoms that can be confused with those caused by COVID-19. Prevention of influenza, reduction of severity, and hospitalization can also reduce stress on the health care system.
