COVID-19 claims more than 20 lives in two Livonia nursing homes
Livonia, Michigan (WXYZ) —Wayne County nursing homes are besieged to target coronavirus vulnerable populations.
Livonia Regency has reported 26 cases of COVID-19 positivity. 15 of them died. Another elderly home, SKLD Livonia, has 20 cases, of which six are reported to have died.
Shirley Stephenson’s family, 62, said she was notified on March 23 that her mother had been taken to hospital. She was a resident of Levonia Regency.
“The nurse called me,” said his son Glenn Bradford. “[She said] She goes only for observation, she is fine and that was it. Something seems to be wrong. “
Mr. Bradford said a doctor called on March 30 with catastrophic news that she had died.
“When the doctor called me, I knew how to squeal,” Bradford said. “I just dropped the phone and broke down.”
Lorraine Smith’s family believes she was also a victim of the coronavirus. She moved to Levonia Regency on March 20, her 80th birthday. On April 9, her family says she has died.
In Wayne County, except Detroit, 94 residents of a nursing home died in connection with COVID-19.
Livonia’s Regency issued a statement:
Since the emergence of COVID-19 in the Metro Detroit area, including the Livonia community, we are aware that people with or without symptoms like COVID-19 have been discharged to a local hospital for treatment. . Based on information received from county health officials, it has been reported that a number of former residents not only tested for COVID-19 positives, but also died from COVID-19. Although we do not always know directly the status of discharged residents, there is no reason to doubt the accuracy of information from the county health department.
All staff members offer deep condolences and thoughts to families and loved ones who have died from COVID-19-related illness. Our staff has been committed to caring for and protecting the residents of Levonia’s Regency.
Positive COVID-19 cases occur at the Metro Detroit Lossing Facility and are increasing in frequency and growth, despite all precautions and guidance followed by nursing home staff. Michigan has the third highest infection rate in the country, and Wayne County is clearly its designated epicenter.
To address this reality, we are working to reduce a limited amount of existing and / or hospitalized positive COVID-19 patients in isolated containment units from the Centers for Disease Control. Can be treated in accordance with guidelines and directives (CDC). We also work closely with the Wayne County Health Department to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of residents and staff.
At our facilities, occupant safety is a top priority. At each shift, our staff monitors changing conditions, such as high temperatures in the facility and the presence of respiratory disease, daily. Staff are screened before and after the shift and should be at home if they are sick or show viral symptoms. Facility leaders participate in regular calls with government and healthcare partners to receive and implement the latest updates and updates related to this issue.
