Mink in the second BC farm test positive for COVID-19
Health officials have detected COVID-19 at a second mink farm in Fraser Valley, BC.
In a media release on Christmas Eve in the media, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said three minks had died on the state’s second farm.
Subsequent tests revealed the presence of SARS-CoV-2, a virus that causes COVID-19 in humans. So far, no worker has been tested positive.
According to the ministry, the farm is under quarantine, preventing animals and supplies from moving from the site.
According to the ministry, mink was tested after some animals on the farm experienced diarrhea. Twenty-three of the 1,000 animals on the farm died between December 19th and December 23rd.
It is unknown how the mink was infected with the virus. The farm has not been identified.

“This mutation is not found in the coronavirus spike protein and was previously reported in mink. At this time, neither mutation nor development indicates an increased risk to human health.”
Tests also revealed that workers and mink were infected with “identical or nearly identical” strains of the virus circulating in BC.
According to BCCDC, the virus has spread from people to mink, not the other way around.
Authorities said more human tests were underway and more samples would be collected from the mink.
According to the BCCDC, farm outbreaks have been contained and the Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries continue to monitor mink farms.
The outbreak first occurred on a mink farm in Canada, but occurred multiple times in Europe and the United States.
In Denmark, scientists have discovered that the virus was transmitted by mink, mutated, and then spread to humans. This raised concerns that it could affect the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Since then, the country has disposed of 17 million animals.
