The number of cases surged to over 1,000 as the HSE drafted a schedule for the introduction of vaccines into nursing homes.
Further testing will be done over the next few weeks to see how much foothold the new Covid-19 stock has in Ireland.
Last night, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan confirmed that a new variant from the United Kingdom had been detected by Dublin’s National Institute of Virology.
It was because the number of new cases exceeded 1,000, but on Christmas day, the deployment of the vaccine to nursing home residents was confirmed, and hope was glimpsed.
Nursing home residents and staff will be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 by the end of February, following the HSE draft schedule for vaccine deployment.

Dr. Holohan said: “Whole genome sequencing at UCD’s National Institute of Virology confirms the detection of a new British variant of Sars-CoV-2.
“Further testing in the coming days and weeks will establish the extent to which it exists. In the meantime, each of us will be at home, avoiding social contact and taking all forms of non-essential travel. It is extremely important to avoid it.
“It is especially important for people arriving from the UK to be strictly quarantined for 14 days after arrival. They should not interact with, visit, socialize or shop with others. Hmm. HSE is preparing to test recent arrivals from the UK. “
Ireland’s coronavirus breeding R numbers are currently estimated at 1.5 to 1.8, the highest since April.

Starting January 11, the vaccination team will move to each of the 583 Hika Elderly Home Care Facilities, both public and private, and will give more than 70,000 vaccinations twice over a six-week period. This includes 29,456 residents and 41,856 staff.
The first facilities to receive the vaccine are in Cork, Tiperary, Dublin, Mayo, Cavan and Offaly.
In Dublin, staff and residents of Phoenix Park’s St. Mary’s Hospital, which killed 24 people in Covid-19 earlier this year, will be vaccinated for the first time in the country on January 11.
On the same day, Hour Lady’s Manor Dalkey, Kiltipper Woods Nursing Home, Glenolin Nursing Home and TLC Center Suntory will be Dublin vaccination facilities. The complete list is published on Independent.ie.
Each home care facility is assigned “Day 1” (first vaccination) and “Day 21” (second vaccination). All residents and staff are required to give prior consent and will be vaccinated on these days whenever possible.
According to the details of the draft copy of the vaccine supply chain model seen by Irish Independent, the first dose will take 3 weeks and the second dose will take an additional 3 weeks, based on a team working 5 days a week.
It is estimated that each vaccinated person will take 12 minutes to receive the vaccine, with the goal of injecting 35 vaccines daily.
Nursing homes, for which documents related to vaccine deployment were provided, were warned that they are in draft form and are incomplete and subject to change.
