1 in 1,000 Americans died of COVID-19
(CNN)-The United States reached a tough milestone on Saturday: 1 in 1,000 Americans have died of COVID-19 since the United States first reported the infection in late January.
The statistics are based on data from the US Census Bureau and Johns Hopkins University. On Saturday, COVID-19 killed 331,909 people nationwide, while the US population is estimated to be around 330,750,000.
The United States also reports about 19 million cases of the virus, the highest number in the world.
The first reported case of COVID-19 in the United States was January 2020, with the first death the following month.
According to Johns Hopkins data, the average daily death toll exceeded 1,000, with deaths in the United States reaching 100,000 in May and 200,000 in September.
During the summer, national mortality and infectious diseases slowed, but have accelerated since November. It took only 11 weeks for the country to reach the death of 300,000 people from the virus announced on December 14.
Hospitals and governments are preparing for yet another surge in the New Year, following the holidays.
Health officials are calling for continued vigilance against the coronavirus protocol, including quarantine, social distance expansion, and wearing masks.
