LA County continues to set record for 44 new COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations – NBC Los Angeles
The Los Angeles County Public Health Service reported 13,580 new COVID-19 cases and 44 new virus-related deaths on Sunday.
To date, there have been 719,833 positive cases and 9,482 deaths, and public health states that these deaths are underestimated due to delays in reporting on holidays and weekends.
In addition, there are currently 6,815 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 20% of whom are in the ICU.
According to the ministry, more than 4.6 million people in the county have been tested for coronavirus, of which 15% are positive.
The daily positive rate for 7 days is currently 17.5%.
“In order for us to stop the surge, LA County residents will need to use the tools they have to delay infections in the area and reduce the number of infected people,” the statement said.
“The strategy that works is the same. There are no gatherings or events with people outside of your immediate home, and you should always wear a proper face cover or mask around other people to keep your physical distance from outside your family. Always maintain. If there is a surge during this time, everyone should be at home unless they provide or receive basic services. Avoid all unnecessary trips and inspect for symptoms or exposure If you have any symptoms or are positive for COVID-19, immediately isolate yourself from your family and others.
“If we take these actions, we will save lives,” the statement said.
Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer has extended the department’s “deep sympathy” to families who are mourning the loss of their loved ones.
“People who mix with non-family members have pushed the COVID-19 pandemic in LA County to the most dangerous level we’ve ever seen,” Feller said.
“Overwhelmed hospitals are the saddest proof of this reality. Honor our healthcare professionals, delay travel plans and meet only with members of our family for the safety of your family and friends. These actions will save lives, “she says. Said.
91% of those who died of COVID-19 had an underlying health condition. Racial and ethnic information is available to 8,897 of the dead (99% of cases reported by public health). 52% of deaths occurred among Latino / Latino residents. 24% of Caucasian residents. 14% of Asian residents. 9% of black residents. Less than 1% of Native Hawaiians / Pacific Islands. 1% of residents who identify with other races. Further investigation revealed that the previously reported 315 cases and 3 deaths were not residents of LA County.
Meanwhile, new, more contagious strains of coronavirus have been reported in Europe. According to Feller, a local laboratory is sequencing a virus sample collected in Los Angeles County, but the process will take about a week to complete, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. ..
The new variant was first reported in the United Kingdom. Strict blockade rules have been enacted in the UK over the past week, but have also been reported in France. It is said to be much more contagious than the original strain of the virus, but has not been found to be more deadly.
Local officials are concerned that if a new strain already exists in Southern California, it could be behind the explosive increase in COVID-19 cases seen after Thanksgiving holidays.
“This happened at a catastrophic rate. Everyone I talked to said that this acceleration exceeded any model or expectation, so people asked,” What broke? ” Is called. And you have to think it’s partly the tension that was there, “Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told the Times Wednesday.
“When I talked to the state’s Department of Public Health, they showed that they were watching and didn’t think they saw,” Feller told the newspaper. “But what you need to know. You’re looking for it. So at this point when you’re seeing this kind of surge, everyone obviously asks,” Is there that particular variant? “
It is unclear at this time whether this variant reduces the efficacy of the two COVID-19 vaccines that have begun to circulate, but that is one of the studies by health authorities.
