Super-infectious strains found in returning travelers
A hyperinfectious strain of COVID-19 that emerged in the United Kingdom was first identified in South Australia.
Health officials said the infection was included in previously reported numbers, and further testing confirmed that it was a mutant virus.
In a statement released Sunday night, SA Health said the incident was with a quarantined traveler who had recently returned from the United Kingdom.
“Genome sequencing indicates that this case has a variant of COVID-19 that emerged in southeast England,” he said.
“There is no evidence that a variant of this virus causes more serious illness.”
The patient has been transferred from Medihotel to Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.
The new strain was first identified in Kent County, UK, in September and was announced by the UK Health Minister earlier this month.
Medical officials believe that the rapidly establishing strain in the region can be up to 70 percent more infectious.
Despite the tighter restrictions, the number of new cases there continues to skyrocket.
South Australia infection means that at least 5 strains have been detected in Australia, all detected in hotel quarantine.
However, federal health officials say they do not plan to impose strict restrictions on flights from the United Kingdom, as other countries do, because Australia’s quarantine system is effective.
Also on Sunday, SA Health confirmed two new cases of coronavirus in a hotel quarantine, both male and female in their thirties.
Testing has confirmed that one of the cases is an old infection. However, it was included in the total number because it was the first time the patient returned a positive test.
This brings the total number of active cases in the state to five, all acquired abroad and are now quarantined in the hotel.
