COVID-19 hospital cases reached record highs in North Carolina for the third consecutive day | National
Raleigh, NC — The number of patients admitted to the coronavirus in North Carolina reached a record high for the third straight day on Tuesday as the pandemic continued to surge on holidays.
The state’s Department of Health and Human Services reported an increase of 145 from Monday, with 3,337 hospitalized throughout the state.
Just a month before Thanksgiving, the total was 1,826, about half of what it is today. Health officials throughout the state and across the country have repeatedly warned residents not to travel or gather during their holidays, fearing that hospital beds will fill up.
The updated North Carolina total will occur after the week following Thanksgiving when the two Johnston County Hospitals in Smithfield and Clayton reach or approach capacity.
The numbers continue to grow at a much higher level than DHHS requires.
Authorities have listed 524,279 confirmed COVID-19 cases, an increase of 3,563 from the total on Monday since the pandemic began in March.
Testing continues to grow across the state, totaling over 6.8 million. DHHS has long sought a positive test rate of less than 5%, last confirmed by North Carolina in September.
Autumn rose near it, but doubled from the day after Thanksgiving. As of Tuesday, it was 13.5% across the state.
Meanwhile, the number of deaths from the virus reached 6,574 on Tuesday, an increase of 13 from Monday, DHHS reported.
DHHS reported on Tuesday that 63,571 residents of North Carolina had been vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine for the first time on Monday at 8 pm.
Both federally licensed vaccines should be given twice at 3- or 4-week intervals. North Carolina began vaccination on December 14.
The North Carolina Vaccination Program requires healthcare professionals in the care of COVID-19 patients, as well as staff and residents of long-term care facilities, to receive the vaccine for the first time.
DHHS has partnered with the COVID-19-related inequality center at North Carolina Central University to ensure that information about the virus reaches underserved communities. The goal is to enable everyone across the state to make informed decisions about the vaccines that are currently available.
