Skilled nursing facility in Santa Maria is vaccinated during the outbreak of COVID-19 | Local News
Vaccinations at the group’s state pharmacies began in California on Monday, and CVS plans to administer Pfizer doses to 15,000 facilities in the coming weeks.
According to CVS Health spokesman Joe Good, CVS locations across the country have the ability to store Moderna vaccines and more in pharmacy buildings. However, due to the ultra-low temperature requirements for storing Pfizer vaccines, these doses are stored in special depot facilities throughout the state.
CVS personnel then receive the dose from the depot location and take it to a skilled nursing facility at the vaccination clinic. Pfizer vaccines can also be packed in dry ice and delivered directly to the facility, Good said.
“We have a team of pharmacists and licensed nurses who are dispatched and deployed to long-term facilities of choice for CVS,” he said.
Mark Hall, director of the Lompoc Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, said the vaccine will be given through Walgreens on Thursday to either 250 residents or staff who request it. He said the inhabitants were excited, but some are still uncertain about the vaccine.
“Most people agree to get vaccinated, but some are a little worried, so we’re trying to educate … Walgreens is great about that,” he said.
The Marian Extended Care Center, a skilled nursing facility connected to the Marian Community Medical Center in Santa Maria, also vaccinated residents and staff from CVS on Monday, spokeswoman Sarah San Juan said.
