This request was made after the state released a five-day COVID-19 figure during the holiday season on Tuesday, showing 2,206 new cases for a total of 50,815 infectious diseases since the pandemic began. ..
The state also reported 74 deaths from the virus, primarily among people living in long-term care or living support facilities.
State health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said people had to follow public health orders because they issued a reminder that social gatherings were not allowed before New Year’s Eve.
“The entire holiday season, including the upcoming New Year, needs to be a quiet holiday season,” she said.
This is especially true in the light of recent discoveries by Island Health officials of the COVID-19 mutant in the United Kingdom, Henry added.
“This virus is even more likely to infect this variant, which means we have to comply more (with public health orders),” she said.
Henry said the number of COVID-19 was low during the holidays. This is because few people want to be inspected and may go into quarantine.
“We expect more tests this week, and we may see more cases.”
It takes an average of 5-7 days for symptoms to appear. That said, people infected with the virus at Christmas gatherings will begin to develop symptoms within a few days, Henry said.
Almost 12,000 people have been vaccinated against the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, she said.
Two healthcare workers had an allergic reaction to the vaccine, but Henry said it wasn’t abnormal. Both people were treated and recovered.
She said doses of the Moderna vaccine have arrived in the state and more will come in the coming days.
The state’s vaccination program focuses on protecting the most at-risk people, including the elderly, long-term care workers and key health care workers, Henry said.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is “noisy,” she said, and needs more training for front-line workers to administer it.
The plan is for the Moderna vaccine to go to remote, isolated indigenous communities.
