Influenza cases remain low across Pennsylvania over the weekend of December 20-26.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health provides weekly updates on influenza activity during the flu season.
Since September 27, which is considered the beginning of the 2020-21 influenza season in Pennsylvania, 51 of the 67 counties in the state have had 1,269 influenza outbreaks. This number only represents if someone has a positive flu test.
The Ministry of Health reports that seven Pennsylvanians died of the flu this season. One person aged 19-49, two people aged 50-64, and four people aged 65 and over.
A total of 17 people were hospitalized for influenza-related problems.
Both influenza A and B were found on laboratory tests.
Due to the small number of cases, county-specific data are not available.
The table on the department’s website, which aims to list the number of cases in each county, “is updated when the number by county increases to a level that protects the confidentiality of patient health information.” The site states.
The bar chart on the website shows that there were about 100 flu cases last week.
The highest number of cases this season was in the first week of December, with more than 600 cases found. There were 250 to 300 cases in the week of October 4th to 10th, December 6th to 12th, and December 13th to 19th. For the rest of the season, the weekly count was well below 100.
The number of cases is well below the number of cases at this point in seven of the last eight seasons.
December 20-26 is the 52nd week of the year. In the 52nd week of 2014-15, there were more than 8,000 cases. There were over 7,000 at this point in 2019-20. Over 3,000 in 2017-18 and 2012-13. Over 2,000 in 2018-19 and 2016-17. More than 1,000 in 2013-14.
The 52nd week of the 2015-16 season was very similar to this year.
The 2020-21 flu season will continue until May 22nd.
According to the Ministry of Health, symptoms of the flu include fever, headache, malaise, dry cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, and body aches.
The ministry states that the best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu vaccine every year. Other ways to stay healthy include washing your hands, covering your mouth and nose, not touching your face, cleaning the surface, and staying at home when you are ill.
