Covid-19 Ireland: Seven counties report a staggering increase in cases in just five days after the Christmas surge

Ireland is now on the verge of a third wave of coronavirus, as cases continue to surge across the country.

One of the key statistics used by health professionals to assess the magnitude of outbreaks here is the 14-day incidence of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

And Monaghan is currently the most hit region in the country on this indicator, with an astonishing proportion of 783.6.

However, the fact that this is up from 384.5 just five days ago is even more pronounced.

Similarly, infections have increased significantly in other border areas, including Laus, Cavan and Donegal, as in Limerick and Sligo.

And one of the country’s biggest surges was Mayo, which reported a rate of 129.5 to 505.7 in just five days.

Dublin has some relatively good news that it is growing slower than many regions, but the incidence in the capital has moved from 265 five days ago to 371.1 last night.
