1 in 8 deaths in coronavirus-related nursing homes in Portugal as outbreaks spread

The outbreak of Lisbon (Reuters) -Coronavirus spread further to Portuguese nursing homes on Easter weekend. One hundred new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in a single dwelling, and nursing homes account for approximately one in eight of the country’s 504 deaths.

Although 16,585 cases recorded as fatalities are only a small part of the number in neighboring Spain, authorities fear that the disease will spread rapidly through nursing homes, as in other parts of Europe.

Home director Louis Maia said Sunday that 83 residents and 17 staff members living in a home for the disabled and mentally ill in the northern town of Vila de Conde tested positive for the coronavirus. Told Renascenca.

Twenty-seven residents from a senior home in the northern Aveiro district were hospitalized with symptoms on Saturday. Last weekend, 15 people positive for the virus died in another house in the same area.

President Marcelo Leverodesusa has offered more than 3,000 people support for nursing homes as part of a program launched on Monday.

According to the press, after three people tested positive for the new coronavirus, a hotel in Lisbon, housing 93 guests, was evacuated on Saturday, and the remaining 90 were relocated to another hotel.

Authorities stressed that low rates in the country do not mean that regulations could be eased soon. In neighboring Spain, fatalities reached 16,972 and confirmed cases were 166,019.

“What happens in one country in Europe affects other countries,” Health Minister Temid said at a news conference on Sunday.

“We need to ease our expectations of returning to normal until the vaccine is available,” she said. “We are a long way away from overcoming this pandemic.”
