According to Dr. Tony Holohan, the flu-like symptoms are likely to be nothing but Covid-19.
The Chief Medical Officer said yesterday that anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms would test positive for the coronavirus. He also urged those waiting for the test to self-quarantine.
“Community positive rates are approaching 25%,” said Holohan. “If you have these symptoms, it may not be anything other than Covid at this time.
“If you are waiting for a test, if you are referred by your GP, or if you are waiting for the results of a test, you need to quarantine yourself.”
Holohan added that few patients at the GP experience flu-like symptoms that do not carry the coronavirus. These symptoms include dry cough, dyspnea, fever, headache, and loss of taste and smell.
Yesterday, too, Ireland had the highest number of Covid-19 cases recorded in one day. 6,110 additional cases were recorded by the Ministry of Health on Monday, killing another six.
The continued increase in cases precedes the definitive decision on the reopening of elementary and junior high schools across the country.
The Ministry of Education has already postponed school reopening until Monday, December 11, and many expect it to be postponed until the end of January, given the spread of the coronavirus in the community.
Immunologist Professor Luke O’Neill Said yesterday “I couldn’t see” the school reopening on Monday if the number of incidents continued to increase this week, he said.
“It depends on the number this week. We can’t see the school opening as more numbers come on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” he said.
“Another risk. I think many of the ministers asked yesterday don’t think the school will reopen, so it looks like they’re heading in that direction.”
