Cincinnati — As the COVID-19 vaccine makes a slow start, some of the highest-risk groups of virus infections and deaths remain skeptical of vaccination. A doctor at the University of Cincinnati wants to convince more people to shoot her personal story.
Dr. Louito Edje, Dean of Graduate School of Medical Education at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, lost a family of four in COVID-19. She is part of the Moderna trial and believes that the newly approved vaccine can stop the spread and prevent further heartache.
“The conversation is that it’s absolutely safe, especially as a black woman,” she said.
Eje said he was interested in saving his community because he knew how much COVID-19 could take away.
“It wasn’t until my stepmother, who was really healthy before, got infected with COVID and died within eight days,” she said. “She was away from our lives and it really put me into action.”
After that, my daughter’s uncle died at the age of 53.
“He was a picture of health,” Edje said.
She has now lost a family of four to the virus.
“It was painful,” she said. “My mother-in-law lived with us and her sister died within the last month. After that, we had an additional family who died in the last two weeks.”
In an attempt to save another family from the same pain, Eje stays in Moderna’s research and talks with the media across the country. She is working particularly hard to reach people in the black and brown communities who have historical grounds for disbelief.
“I live in a black family and I have a skeptical view of my family, but first of all I think you have to admit the facts,” Eje said.
She said the fight against false information was herself determined to win for her community, many of which would never be shot by many now. ..
