Soaring cases related to pre-Christmas mixing during deregulation
The PRE-CHRISTMAS socialization was associated with about 2,000 new coronavirus cases in Northern Ireland yesterday.

Six hospitals, including Altnagelvin, Antrim, Mater, Royal Victoria, South West Acute, and Ulster Hospital, also operated beyond capacity yesterday.
Northern Ireland’s Nightingale Hospital (located in the skyscrapers of Belfast City Hospital) was also reported last night to be expanded.
According to the BBC NI, it plans to increase the number of intensive care units from 24 to 32.
Currently, 20 Covid-19 patients are undergoing intensive care at the facility and 4 beds are available.
Meanwhile, in the Republic, 7,836 confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been reported, with an additional 17 deaths associated with the virus.
The seven-day infection rate in the Republic was 645.4 per 100,000, compared to 650.9 per 100,000 for the first time, surpassing Northern Ireland.
A total of 954 Covid-19 patients were hospitalized and 88 were admitted to the ICU.
Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer of the Republic, said the state is “at a critical stage of this Covid-19 surge. In Ireland, there is evidence of an increasing presence of British variants. All counties have this. Has an ascending trajectory of illness.
“There are concerns about escalation of hospital and ICU admissions. It is very likely that mortality and ICU admissions will escalate in the coming days and weeks.”
Separately, Health Minister Stormont Robin Swan has announced that he will extend free winter flu shots to people aged 50-64.
Jabs are offered through 350 regional pharmacies or general practitioners to reduce further pressure on medical services.
Swan said: “This year the flu vaccine program is becoming more prevalent. This is very encouraging, but it is still very important to take all necessary steps to reduce the spread of influenza.
“This is especially true given the very high levels of Covid-19 infection in our community. Reducing the pressure caused by seasonal influenza protects our healthcare services and Helps save lives. “
