Wayne Nogier, interim CEO of Lakeview Pioneer Lodge, said almost all residents and many staff were infected.
The Ministry of Health confirmed that 43 out of 44 residents were infected and 19 employees were ill. According to Nogier, the number of infected staff is much higher, about 45.
“What hit us here was the fact that the management team was part of a test that returned positive,” Nozier told Global News. “It really paralyzes the organization to run.”
The outbreak began at the end of December and spread rapidly thereafter, said the house director Gilles Leblanc.
“It almost exploded in three or four days,” he said. “It was difficult for everyone in the facility or on the board to react. We felt helpless.”

Jill said he had been unable to enter the building since March as a safety precaution.
The cause of the outbreak is unknown, but Nogier said it could have come from asymptomatic staff or residents who participated in the necessary appointments outside the home.
“Once here, our inhabitants are not masked like us. When we are not outbreaks, they are resuming life with normal abilities,” he said.
“One resident can infect the entire population within 24 hours.”
Residents are isolated in their room. Many of them are asymptomatic, Nogier said.
“People are dealing with this virus very well,” he said.
Of the 155 COVID-19-related deaths reported in the state in 2020, 65 were in long-term care facilities, according to statistics provided by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.
Lakeview Pioneer Lodge is an affiliate of the Saskatchewan Department of Health. Nogier said SHA is “very sensitive” and supports staffing and infection control.
Staff follow strict safety protocols, but Nogier states that he has been re-educated on the use of PPE and how to spread the virus.
In the future, he will look to vaccination, but pointed out that there are logistical challenges in transporting vaccines to rural areas.
Wakau is about 95km northeast of Saskatoon.
